Didnt really buy this thinking i would be interested in reading the whole thing…just maybe learn a little something about a profession i had never experienced. Being a mom with 3 ungrateful picky eaters and one unappreciative entitled spouse, i had always very much appreciated being served when dining out but could never understand why my husband was such a cheapskate tipper. I was always in total awe that a complete stranger who neither knew us nor cared to would take the thankless job of trying to please us for 15% of the cost of our meal. While my husband begrudged him even that 15%... I still dont believe i'll ever understand my husband's attitude but i do feel i understand yours now. You are a decent, kind and caring person who needed a job and you'd have made a TERRIBLE and short term server if you hadn't possessed the above mentioned attributes as well as having a keen wit, a healthy defensive wealth of sarcasm and alcohol, a solid grasp of people's flaws and vulnerabilities and the ability to see them as they're incapable of seeing themselves yet accepting them anyway (on ur own terms) and you're not so totally self absorbed that you're too blind to take a good look at yourself when it is necessitated. You've only just tapped into a wealth of stories you have to write about. People.....the tip of ur iceberg! I loved ur book and thoroughly and sincerely enjoyed every bit of it! Thanks for sharing ur stories - keep 'em coming!!! I'll be waiting with my expresso!

Well, after reading this you will know why they say that.Being a waiter is an occupation that seemingly everyone can do, but why is there such high turnover? What could be complicated about bringing me the thing that I ordered? Why is it not considered "a real job?"There are politics and dynamics that only exist in this world. Pick up the book and you will have a better understanding of it and laugh through your education.
This is a combination autobiography (of the author's years spent as a waiter, primarily his several year period at the "Bistro" restaurant), as well as his humorous, sad, and dystopian story of being a waiter. Based on his real-life experiences, it is eye-opening and enlightening about how restaurants are run, and the life of a waitperson (along with the rest of the restaurant staff). The author originated a blog called "Waiter's Rant" a few years before the book was published and the surprising success of his blog prompted him to write this book. He is rather talented as a writer. The book is interesting, funny, and provides marvelous insight into human nature at play in restaurant waiter-customer transactions. Some of the content is laugh out loud, but most of it is, well, a "rant" about not only customers, but restaurant owners, fellow waitpersons, cooks, busboys, hostesses, and the peaks and valleys of living on the benevolence (tips) of customers. Towards the end the writing gets rather discouraging as the author goes into full rant mode about desperately wanting to get out of the "Bistro" nightmare. While I enjoyed the book, and I recommend it strongly to anyone who wants some juicy insights into the restaurant business, and waitperson's in particular (how to act, now not to act, what retribution may come your way if your cross swords with your waitperson, etc.), I wonder what this talented writer can do next? He certainly has a way with the twist of a phrase, writes interesting dialogue, tongue-in-cheek humor, and use of language, but it seems he's used it all up in this book on his "life occupation." I wish him the best, and hope he can come up with another genre and make it interesting. Bottom line, I enjoyed the book.
Dublanica sees every person -- customers, coworkers, restaurant owners, movie stars -- as a human being with human motives and foibles. He does spend a lot of time skewering them, but with occasional flashes of warm sympathy. He is also unsparing in self-analysis.On the negative side: the chapters become repetitious and tedious, particularly the stream of irritating customers (although maybe Dublanica is subtly chronicling his increasing disenchantment with the job -- the customers aren't getting ruder with time; he's burning out). This book would be better if it were shorter.
This book was exactly what I expected it to be - one man's experience over years of employment in the restaurant hospitality industry. My son has worked in this industry over the years too and many of the incidents described were similar to his experiences. The take-aways for me are how physically demanding this job is as well as mentally exhausting - that a holiday may mean more tips but also increases the amount of abuse taken from customers and the physical demands of covering understaffed sections. Maybe understanding that will make consumers more kind and patient unless we are truly getting poor service. Interesting read - I like learning about various occupations and recommend this book for one person's inside look.
Steve Dublanica has a talent for telling a story. Unlike Kitchen Confidential, this book lets us in on some of the back kitchen and front of the house shenanigans in some of the best New York restaurants. I laughed while I learned how to get better service and how to be more understanding if my waiter/waitress is just having a bad night. I hurried through this book because it was hard to put down. That's five stars in my book!
